calgary food record Calgary Food Bank sets world recordThe Calgary Food Bank collected a whale of an amount of food in one day. The food drive yesterday took in more than 200 tonnes of food, or the weight of a blue whale, the heaviest animal on Earth. Food bank spokesman April Cruz said that amount of chow set a new record for the most amount of food collected in a single day.
More than 7,000 volunteers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spent the week distributing bags to nearly 360,000 homes and businesses in Calgary and then returning to pick them up.
Six drop-off locations were also set up throughout the city and donations could be made at most grocery stores.
Volunteer scrutineers were on hand to verify each trailer filled with food brought to the food bank warehouse.

The results will be sent to Guinness World Records’ head office in London. The old record of 90 tonnes was held by Regina.
Last year, the food bank serviced 87,202 people and Cruz said that number has gone up slightly this year.

Sonya Thomas eats 181 Chicken Wings in 12 Min set World Record

A
diminutive South Korean-born woman who calls herself the Black Widow
devoured her opposition to set a new world record for eating chicken
wings just outside New York yesterday.

Sonya Thomas showed off her deadly bite, scoffing a staggering 181 wings
- some 4.86lbs (2.2 kilograms) - in just 12 minutes at the National
Buffalo Wing Eating Contest to claim her 29th world record.

The 43-year-old, who only weighs 105lbs, saw off world No1 Joey
Chestnut - he managed 169 chicken wings - and was delighted to have
chomped her way to victory.

'I'm
so happy!' said 5ft Thomas, gobbling up her third National Buffalo
Wing Eating Contest. 'Sometimes if I try to chew too much I slow down. I
used my hands more than the mouth. But that was just an appetizer!'

In the first time they have ever gone up against each other Chestnut was favored by many to take the title.

But the Black Widow showed Chestnut that he had bitten off more than he
could chew at Buffalo - a town about 300 miles northwest of the Big
Apple, said to be the birthplace of the wings.

They
pushed each other really hard,' said Drew Cerza, who founded the
festival in 2001. 'Joey is so strong. He's got great jaw strength. But
Sonya's so fast with the hand.'

Thomas joined the International Federation of Competitive Eating in 2003
and quickly rose to the top of the ranks, beating competitive eaters
such as Ed 'Cookie' Jarvis and Eric Booker.

She set the previous wings record in 2005, when she ate 174 in 12
minutes and has also held eating records for oysters, hard-boiled eggs,
cheesecake and jalapeno peppers.

Thomas's nickname refers to her ability to regularly defeat men four
to five times her size and her most famous result was when she scoffed
37 hot dogs in 12 minutes.

World's Strongest, Incredible India, Guiness Records, World Records,

World's biggest potato.

Peter Glazebrook has boldly gone where few men have gone before - into the record books for the world's biggest potato.
The amateur gardener pulled up the giant spud - weighing a whopping 8lbs 4oz - and found it bore an uncanny resemblance to Star Trek's Enterprise spaceship.
The potato, which was unveiled today at the National Gardening Show in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, weighs 9oz more than the previous record holder.

Mr Glazebrook, 66, is now awaiting verification from the Guinness Book of World Records.
He said: 'The secret to success is starting with the right seed.

'It's learning how to grow them and putting a lot of effort in and picking up tips from other growers and reading what you can about it.'

The retired chartered surveyor, from Northampton, has previously hit the headlines for his over-sized veg.

He previously held the world record for the longest carrot, after producing a 17ft long monster.

Mr Glazebrook has also been the double Guinness World Record holder for the heaviest parsnip, at 13lb, and the longest beetroot at 21ft.

The success followed last month's astonishing feat of growing by Maria Desimone who produced a 5ft 6in courgette in her garden vegetable patch.

The mother-of-two, from Cambridge, said it was her first attempt at growing courgettes and added: 'They were outside in all sorts of weather. This one just kept on getting bigger.'

World's Longest Embroidered Saree in India World Record set by Suneet Verma

World's Longest Embroidered Saree in India World Record set by Suneet Verma

Suneet Varma has done it - he has entered Limca Book of Records by creating the world's longest embroidered saree which is all of 55 metres. The ace designer has termed the recognition a 'sweet surprise'.

Varma, along with a team of eight designers and more than 55 artisans, created the 55 metre long and 45 inch wide sari in 10 weeks. The Delhi-based designer took inspiration from the mythological character Draupadi's 'chirharan'.

It took 26,400 hours to complete the sari, which is priced at Rs.885,000.

"Saris are my forte and I have always looked up to this five yard wonder as a canvas on which I can do interesting things. I like doing out-of-box things with it," said Varma.

The sari has been especially designed exclusively for Vogue's Fashion Night Out, a shopping extravaganza that will take place Sep 10 at Vasant Kunj's DLF Emporio Mall.

When Varma was designing the sari, he never thought he would create a record.

"While I was designing the sari, I had no figures in mind or I was not aiming at setting a world record. It just happened and when something like this happens which you had never expected, it comes as a sweet surprise," said Varma.

"I was inspired by Draupadi because it was seemingly endless and very very long. So this sari has my own interpretation of what her life was like."

Varma has also taken inspiration from contemporary India, wedding ceremonies, forests with palm trees, the religious iconography of the gods and goddesses and the birds and animals depicted in Indian textiles.

He used silk-georgette, dyed into myriad colors of yellow, orange, fushia pink, lime green, red and cobalt blue for the sari, which has a running patch work, silk brocade and satin printed three-inch border all around.

Varma has used various techniques like applique of silk georgette, satin printed patchwork, hand sequence embroidery, mirror work, threadwork in aari, hand-sprinkle of bead work and ribbon flowers on the sari.

American Ed Burns with 1501 piercings – New World Record

Ed Burns American Ed Burns from Wyoming breaks down piercing record. The old record was 304 piercings and Ed Burns breaks it down with amazing assault. It took him long 4 hours and 27 minutes to archive this queer achievement.

Body piercing, a form of body modification, is the practice of puncturing or cutting a part of the human body, creating an opening in which jewellery may be worn.

The word piercing can refer to the act or practice of body piercing, or to an opening in the body created by this act or practice. While the history of body piercing is obscured by a lack of scholarly reference and popular misinformation, ample evidence exists to document that it has been practiced in various forms by both sexes since ancient times throughout the world.

Ear piercing and nose piercing have been particularly widespread and are well represented in historical records and among grave goods. The oldest mummified remains ever discovered were sporting earrings, attesting to the existence of the practice more than 5,000 years ago. Nose piercing is documented as far back as 1500 B.C.E. Piercings of these types have been documented globally, while lip and tongue piercings were historically found in African and American tribal cultures. Nipple and genital piercing have also been practiced by various cultures, with nipple piercing dating back at least to Ancient Rome while genital piercing is described in Ancient India ca. 320 to 550 C.E. The practice of body piercing has waxed and waned in Western culture, but it has experienced an increase of popularity since World War II, with sites other than the ears gaining subcultural popularity in the 70s and spreading to mainstream in the 1990s.

The reasons for piercing or not piercing are varied. Some people pierce for religious or spiritual reasons, while others pierce for self-expression, for aesthetic value, for sexual pleasure, to conform to their culture or to rebel against it. Some forms of piercing remain controversial, particularly when applied to youth. The display or placement of piercings have been restricted by schools, employers and religious groups. In spite of the controversy, some people have practiced extreme forms of body piercing, with Guinness bestowing World Records on individuals with hundreds and even thousands of permanent and temporary piercings.

Contemporary body piercing practices emphasize the use of safe body piercing materials, frequently utilizing specialized tools developed for the purpose. Body piercing is an invasive procedure with some risks, including allergic reaction, infection, excessive scarring and unanticipated physical injuries, but such precautions as sanitary piercing procedures and careful aftercare are emphasized to minimize the likelihood of encountering serious problems. The healing time required for a body piercing may vary widely according to placement, from as little as a month for some genital piercings to as much as two full years for the navel.

Meet the Thermometer Man

Tuesday, 31 August 2010

Richard T. Porter has earned the nickname “The Thermometer Man” by putting together a collection of around 5,000 thermometer of various shapes and sizes. More images after the break...

The small village of Onset, in Wareham, Massachusetts, may not be among the world’s top travel destination, but Richard T. Porter has been working long and hard to put this settlement on the tourist map. He spent decades putting together his thermometer collection and opened the Porter Thermometer Museum. The founder, curator and educator of this unusual museum has been featured by Ripley’s Believe Ir or Not, and is in the Guinness Book of Records for the world’s largest collection of thermometers.
After serving in the Korean War, Richard T. Porter returned to the US and began teaching junior high school science. He used thermometers to educate his students, and that’s when he fell in love with them. He began collecting them and also took up repairing broken thermometers and even got a reputation for his skill. Throughout the years he fixed old thermometers from as far as New Zealand.
His thermometer collection kept growing, and in 1990, when he lost his daughter to a brain tumor, he decided to build a thermometer museum, after his daughter made him promise he would do something with his collection. Along with his wife, Richard T. Porter traveled to all 50 American states and 20 other countries, on all seven continents, collecting thermometers. The museum was officially opened in 1993, and has earned Onset the title of “thermometer capital of the world”.
The 83-year-old Thermometer Man knows he won’t be around forever, and has already made arrangements to donate his extensive thermometer collection to the National Weather Museum, in Penn State. Most of his collection has already been moved there, but he still keeps a few of his beloved collectibles around, and keeps busy by giving presentations on thermometers and the hazards of mercury, to schools and other organizations.
Next time you’re looking for the most accurate temperature reading in the world, head over to the Thermometer Museum of Onset, and ask the Thermometer Man himself.
